Dr. Gordon & Trisha Cohen

Gordon A. Cohen, MD, PhD, is chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Seattle Children’s Hospital and professor of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He is co-director of Seattle Children’s Heart Center and holds the Sam and Althea Stroum Endowed Chair in Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery.

He received his MD from Tulane University School of Medicine; he earned an MS and a PhD in pharmacology from the University of California, Los Angeles. He is currently in business school at the University of Tennessee working towards an MBA designed specifically for physicians.  He completed residencies in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine and in general surgery at UCLA Medical Center. Cohen was a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London and senior lecturer at the Institute of Child Health at University College London. His interests include complex neonatal repairs, pediatric heart and lung transplant, mechanical cardiac assistance and heart failure. He is conducting research on the use of pediatric ventricular assist devices.
Trisha is a long-time volunteer and advocate for the American Heart Association.  She is the busy mother of three young boys and the wife of a pediatric heart surgeon.  Although not currently practicing, Trisha is a cardiac critical care nurse by profession.  In 2002, while living in London, Trisha started experiencing chest pain.  Concerned because her father had died suddenly of a heart attack at a young age, Trisha sought the care of a cardiologist.  Tests revealed no blockage or coronary artery disease but she was diagnosed with Cardiac Syndrome X, a condition seen in many women but not yet completely understood.  Although she was originally placed on medication, Trisha was determined to treat the condition with changes in lifestyle.  She follows a heart healthy diet that focuses on vegetables and fish.  She also commits to a vigorous regular aerobic exercise program.  Today she is off medication, pain free and in great physical condition.
